Local News November/December 2000
From
the
Editor Having got behind with November`s letter, (for which apologies), it seemed sensible to take up the sympathetic suggestion of a resident and produce a joint November/December one. So this is a rather early Christmas letter, with very best wishes for Christmas and the New Year. This (as you may remember from last year` debate) is the proper time to celebrate the Millennium; since year 0 AD did not exist, we shall in fact have completed 2000 years AD at the end of the year 2000, not at the beginning. So if you celebrated the Millennium last year, have an excuse to celebrate it again !

At the last meeting of the Trustees, tribute was paid to the late Edward Lance. Not only had he been a very active member of village and church for many years; it was also in large part due to his efforts that the Trust came into being in the first place from the proceeds of the sale of Staintondale School. He will be greatly missed by all those who knew him.
The following was sent by the recipient of a grant from the Trust. I have removed the name from the bottom in case he/she is embarrassed at appearing in print !
"Dear Staintondale Trust, I am writing to you to thank you for helping me go on a school trip. So I decided to write you a short diary of what I did at Carlton Lodge.
5.30 Arrived at Carlton lodge and went to sit in the lounge to have welcomes and introductions, e.g Meeting Steeve our main helper for the weekend
6.00 Tea. We all had a big surprise , we all thought the chips would be cold and the burgers chewy but everything was perfect , just right for a good welcome.
6.30 A grand toor of Carlton lodge was presented to us as we walked around the lake taking the advantage of the unreachable rope swing and the high rope bridge which we all hoped we would get to go on.
7.00 Our first activity. We went into the large sports hall with , climbing wall and the brand new basket ball hoops. Doing our first activity we all got to know the leader and he got to know us, as we called our names out and did an action with it.
9.00 Saying that the leader had finished, we all ran to get our money for the unmissable vending machines. After gobbling sweets and guzzling Coke we all began to unpack properly and show each others bedrooms off to each other making comments as we did it like, "Yours is tiny," or "yours is massive!"
10.00 We know had to get ready for bed and next door in the boys room a small casino opened and C urtis, the silly one, bought 13 cans of sprite and shared them with everyone as long as they left a £ 5.00 tip at the door!
10.30 We know we had to get to sleep, although everyone was walking around the dormatories scaring people in the middle of the night.
5ATURDAY
7.30 We all got up and did the usual things, e.g. wash, dress. We had a big cooked breakfast which was lovely. After this we all had to get our own packed lunch ready, doing our own sandwich fillings etc.
9.00 In the lounge we split into two groups. One group were going to go caving in the morning but the caves were flooded because of the heavy rain. Instead we went orienteering in Silton Woods, still in the pouring rain.
12.00 Instead of having our lunch out we had it in the dining room.
12.30 Now the groups swapped over - the other group went orienteering whilst my group went rock-climbing and absailing in the large, indoor sports hall.
5.30 We had our tea then got washed and dressed for the disco. Everyone was downstairs dancing. Half way through some of us got a bit tired and went upstairs to play cards. Mrs Robinson came up and said we could either go to bed or go to the disco so we went downstairs again. We had a late night.
SUNbAY
7.30 Lovely cooked breakfast again.
9.00 We got into two teams again and were kitted out with waterproofs to go kayaking and raft-building. After our disastrous attempt at raft-building we went kayaking. We were taught some tricks and then played a game, it was water polo. Paddling around, the instructor said to me "you look a bit too dry" so he soaked me! After getting out of the water we were offered a chance to jump off a rope bridge, which some of us did. The water was freezing and in some places 20 feet deep. When I jumped off of the rope bridge into the water it seemed to take for ages to get back to the surface and even then the cold water was such a shock that I couldn't breathe and I only just managed to get to the side. We all went inside to change into something dry before lunch at 12.00.
In the afternoon the two groups were divided between archery and the confidence course. The archery was easy but the arrows wouldn't stick into the targets. The confidence course was walking around the lake and guiding people with blindfolds on. We all managed to do this successfully. We then had to start to pack up ready for our families to collect us.
The food was marvelous, never too hot and never too cold. There were three instructors. The main instructor who did, most things with us was called Steve and he didn't push us into doing anything we didn't wan't to. Then the other two I did not get the names of although they were just as nice
And thank you once again for making this superb weekend possible for me."
The Trust always much appreciates letters of this sort. Well done, the anonymous writer !

COOKERY CORNER.
I ran a Christmas Cake Club after school. Places were limited and very sought after. Cakes were made before half term and carefully stored, then marzipanned and decorated in the weeks up to the end of term. The pupils poured over endless books and magazines, anxious to find an exciting way to decorate their cakes in the hope of winning the annual competition. Laura had decided on a very effective star design for her cake. The day came to marzipan the cakes. I took the cakes from the cupboard during the afternoon and was alarmed to find a mouse had taken a fancy to the corner of Laura's cake. At such short notice, I hadn't time to make a replacement so I re-labelled the cake I had made for demonstration, and hoped Laura wouldn't notice. The following week, Laura came to me and said," I think I've changed my mind about my design. I'd like to do this," where upon she produced a picture of a Festive mouse singing carols!! I still couldn't say anything to her but felt sure she knew my secret. The mouse design went on to win second prize. Laura sent me a Christmas card with a mouse on. She surely knew. Some weeks after Christmas I did some investigation and eventually faced Laura with my secret. She had had no idea of the dramas and her design and card were purely coincidental!! When I left the school, Laura gave me a Beatrix Potter figure of Hunca Munca, so I have a permanent reminder of Laura and her cake and the mouse!
Here is a good recipe for a very CHEERY MULLED WINE: Pierce a lemon with a skewer about 16 times and put a whole clove in each hole. Put this in a pan with a cinnamon stick, 2 oz (50 gm) demerara sugar and 1 Pt red wine. Heat until the sugar has dissolved and the flavours mingled. Add a wine glass of brandy and serve hot with mince pies. (Don't boil after the brandy is added.) Here's wishing you all a very cheery and stress free Christmas. J.H. Parish Council
Extracts from the Minutes of the meeting on October 18th
Next meeting to be in Ravenscar Village Hall, date to be arranged by the Clerk. For those with access to the Internet, The Parish Council Website, at http://homepages.thefree.net/staintondalepc/ contains the full minutes. Do use the cybercafe to read through them if you would like to know more and are not on the Internet. Julia Marley, the Clerk to the Council, does a brilliant job keeping them up to date. If you have any concerns which you would like to bring to the attention of the Council, such as road and footpath problems, non-working street-lamps, etc, please contact Mrs Marley in the first instance on 870 299.
LOCAL HISTORY GROUP.
Ravenscar Village Hall was full almost to capacity on the afternoon of Sunday October 22nd for the third Annual Exhibition mounted by the History Group. The focus for the afternoon was the momentous years 1910-1950 which is well within the memories of many people. Each of the two World Wars had a special display and much local information and material had been assembled. The members of the group wish to express their sincere thanks to all the many people both locally and from further afield who were so willing to lend us their precious family photographs and mementoes. A raffle was held for group funds and the winners were Hetty Dickinson (who drew her own ticket!), Rev. Graham Taylor, Gladys Roberts (who had lent us some material for the exhibition), Ken Dowson, John March, Mr Cross, Robert Patterson and Geoff Edmondson. Refreshments were served by Mary Braviner and her team of helpers. Over £150 pounds were raised to boost group funds ML
HISTORICAL SNIPPET
The members of the Local History Group consider themselves very fortunate that there are so many friends around the district who are willing to lend us their treasured photographs, objects and family mementoes for our exhibitions. It is these things that give the true local feel to the displays. Among these friends we must include Frank and Gladys Roberts from Sleights who have a long association with the area and Bell Hill and Dansedale in particular. At the time of the October exhibition, Mrs Roberts showed me some very fragile negatives on glass slides. Two of them show a trawler "Mandalay" which was stranded at Ravenscar in 1908 so that probably dates the whole set. The rest are all pictures of Cross family members except for one slide which is a puzzle. It shows a covered horse-drawn wagon with a poster and banners on the side which say "DOUBLE BUXTON'S MAJORITY" Who was Buxton? I assume that the wagon belonged to some kind of traveller who was going around local farms, perhaps selling things. A rapid trawl through the catalogues at Scarborough Reference Library has yielded nothing at all so far, so perhaps I should try looking at the Whitby area for clues. Ring 870028 if you have any ideas on this mystery. ML
(Ed. Could it be an election campaign wagon, encouraging even more people to vote for Mr Buxton, whoever he was - a County/Town Councillor, or even an MP - and hence double his majority ? What does anyone else think ?)
Staintondale and Ravenscar Local History Group.
At the November meeting the speaker was Diane Tasker who gave a slide show tracing the growth and development of Scarborough through Victorian times by looking at the architecture of buildings in the town. These ranged from the grand municipal, religious and commercial buildings to the more humble dwelling houses of the ever-growing population. The December meeting will take the form of a social drink on December 19th, venue to be arranged. Michael Lester

Farmer`s Monthly
JUST WHEN YOU THINK THAT IT CANNOT GET ANY WETTER! I HAVE NEVER KNOWN A HARVEST SO LATE, ALTHOUGH I REMEMBER WHEN I WAS AT SCHOOL GOING HOME FOR THE OCTOBER HALF TERM AND HELPING TO COMBINE A FIELD OF OATS, BUT IT WAS FINE AT THE TIME. NOW IT JUST KEEPS RAINING ON AND ON. THERE ARE SOME CROPS THAT WON'T GET HARVESTED THIS YEAR, IT'S NOT JUST THE CEREALS, POTATOES ARE ROTTING BECAUSE THEY ARE UNDER WATER. AND TO THINK THAT WE HAVE ESCAPED SOME OF THE WORST WEATHER. IF WE WERE IN FRANCE THEY WOULD HAVE DECLARED A STATE OF EMERGENCY.
